World Down Syndrome Day - Lots of Socks

What is Down Syndrome?

An individual who has an extra chromosome, chromosome 21 instead of 46 chromosomes but 47 chromosomes. At most may cause brain development delay at birth that may cause mental and physical challenges.  According to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), about 1 in 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome. It’s the most common genetic disorder in the United States.

3 Types of Down Syndrome:

  1. Trisomy 21: most common form of Down syndrome; an extra copy of chromosome 21 in every cell. (accounts for 95% of cases)

  2. Mosaicism: when a child is born with an extra chromosome in some but not all of their cells. (accounts for 4% of cases)

  3. Translocation: a child has only an extra part of chromosome 21. One of the 46 total chromosomes has an extra piece of chromosome 21 attached. (accounts for 1% of cases)

People with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate and is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that these individuals possess.

How is wearing different sock designs a form of awareness for World Down Syndrome Day?

Aside from looking funny during your day and having a great laugh with your friends while sharing your funky socks. Wearing different socks allows everyone to embrace difference as a beautiful element in life. The idea was created because individuals with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome and chromosomes are shaped “like socks”.

Lots of socks started in 2013, people all over the world wear colorful, attractive, crazy socks on WDSD to get noticed. Other sock-themed activities like puppet making and games are also carried out in schools, playgroups, daycares, and workstations. To get people talking and asking questions, the organizers of WDSD recommend wearing, “not just any socks, brightly colored socks, mismatched socks, long socks, printed socks, one sock. Maybe even three socks, one for each chromosome.”

Make it stand out.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
